The View From Inside The Archives By Rusty R.
The 9th Annual Archives Workshop ended on Sunday Sept. 26, 2004. The fourth Saturday, my work day at Archives was during the 9th NAW., so I did not spend much time inside the Archives. Nor did I attend any of the workshop sessions. I was Special Needs Chairman for the workshop, this included providing rides to and from the airport. This job began on Tuesday with my first pickup. I picked up one on Wednesday. We had eight request for rides on Thursday. I spent the day in the baggage area of the airport meeting people. Rides to Murfreesboro were provided by volunteers, each made one trip. Low, Tom (from my home group, Ridgetop Basic Group) Hayes from (Goodlettsville Group), Willie B. From the Murfreesboro Group. I made one trip myself which lead to one of thiose "GOD Things" I ran late geeting back to meet the next person in baggage claim. I thought that I would have two people mad at me tommorrow. Somehow in the Nashville Airport one member of AA finds another member even though they have never met. I had one person that needed a ride to and from his hotel every day. I thought this would be a hassle. The rides ended up being some of the best AA time of the week, thanks to Jerry. I had two pick ups on Friday. Elizabeth M. drove on the first, I made the last run by myself. The hurricane affected the workshop, we had one cancellation and on Saturday one early departure. When I was not on the road or at the airport I helped out with coffee & hospitality. I did not have time to learn anything about preservation or conservation of archives materials. I did have time to spend time with AA's from all over the United States. I did on Saturday attend the banquet and hear the speaker, Gale L. the topic was Women in Early AA, informative & moving. I saw several people wiping tears through my own tears. The last day, Sunday, brought a case of nerves for me, we had twelve people to get to the airport with departure times ranging from 1 pm to 6 pm. Thanks to Milton C. and Elizabeth M. we got everyone where they needed to be without spending to much time at the airport. While I worked hard, every member on the committee did. Special Thanks to Charley, Tom, David for finding me a place on the committee.
